“The new guide addresses many of the questions commonly asked by consumers,” shares Jesse Slome, executive director of the long term care insurance trade group.    ”Individuals are increasingly aware of the need to think about long term care planning but they want to have an idea of what protection costs and smart strategies for buying the right amount of coverage at the best possible price.”

The guide, originally published in this month’s Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine addresses strategies for when to begin planning, options to deal with the risk of rising costs for care and provides examples of ways to save.  “Selecting a 60-day deductible period for your policy will reduce premium costs by nearly 15 percent yearly, while selecting a 90-day deductible provides an even greater savings,” according to Slome.

“One question we are often asked is when is the best age to start looking into long term care insurance,” the expert notes.  “The younger you are the more likely you will qualify for good health discounts as well as obtain lower rates.”  The guide provides industry average costs for buyers from ages 40 up to age 65.

According to Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, new research reported in the June 2013 edition of the Harvard Business Review offers insights that can be beneficial to insurance and financial professionals who market long term health care insurance.

“If you imagine your birthday next year, you’ll envision the scene as if you were looking out with your own eyes,” Slome shared with West Coast insurance professionals.  “But if you are asked to imagine your birthday in 20 years, some people won’t picture an older version of themselves and these people are more likely to avoid issues related to planning.”

Slome shared findings from the research findings.  “Scientists found that digitally altered photographs helped people relate to important matters like saving for retirement,” Slome explained.  Researchers used photo altering tools to show people images of themselves at older ages.  “Those who actually saw older images of themselves set aside 6.8 percent of their pay for retirement on average versus 5.2 percent who were shown pictures of their current selves,” Slome reported.

A number of companies already are using this technique to help people understand and relate to the issue Slome notes.  Merril Lynch is using some of the photo altering technology on it’s website.

“It is important to help people really picture what life in their future may be like,” Slome advised.  “And how their aging will affect their family and loved ones.”  The national long term care insurance expert noted that far too many people fail to understand that planning for long term care can’t begin after age 70.  “It has to start in ones 50s and 60s when there is still time to plan and options such as insurance are still available to folks,” Slome advised.

“Women face a significant risk of needing long term care and actually receive 66 percent of all long term care insurance benefit dollars paid out yearly,” explains Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance.   The head of the national trade group just authored a new consumer planning guide for the millions of women on their own.

“There are millions of women between the ages of 50 and 65 who are single, divorced or widowed,” Slome noted.  “They not only face a great risk of needing care one day but lack the built-in caregiver of a spouse and many don’t have adult children they can call on if a need for care occurs.  Planning is so important for women, but we believe it is especially important for the category we refer to as women on their own.”

The new guide was produced by the Association to help insurance professionals reach out to prospects in light of pending higher insurance costs for women recently announced by several leading long term care insurance companies.  “Women will start to pay more for this important protection with some states implementing the rate increases in April,” Slome reports.  “The window is closing for women to lock in the lower unisex rates still being offered by some insurers, but that will likely end at some point this year.”

The new guide is available in electronic format allowing insurance professionals to attach copies to emails, post on their websites and offer via blogs and other media.  Guides are personalized with the agent’s contact information, photograph and other personalization.
